Team Reid Waiting for Sharron Angle to Commit to Debates

By Elizabeth Crum | 3:52 pm July 15th, 2010

Yesterday Team Reid campaign announced its plans to participate in two statewide non-partisan debates with opponent Sharron Angle, assuming she agrees to them.

The first debate will be sponsored by Sunbelt Communications and the Las Vegas Sun and will air statewide on KRNV, KSNV, and KENV on October 19, 2010. The debate will happen in Reno and will include a panel of three Nevada journalists including Ralston, Anjeanette Damon, and a third journalist to be named later.

(Um… I checked my calendar and do happen to be free that evening, just in case anyone was wondering.)

The second debate will be hosted by the Nevada Broadcasters Association Foundation in Las Vegas sometime in October and will be moderated by Mitch Fox, producer and host of Nevada Week in Review.

Angle Reports $2.3 Million Raised 5/20 to 6/30, $1.7 Million Cash On Hand

By Elizabeth Crum | 2:28 pm July 15th, 2010

Numbers from the Angle campaign a few minutes ago (and as first Flashed by Ralston):

Total Contributions Election Cycle-To-Date = $3,545,132.86

- Total Contributions 2nd Quarter Report (dates 5/20 – 6/30) = $2,290,936.53

- Total Contributions this Report from Individuals = $2,222,186.53

- Total Contributions this Report from PACs = $68,750.00

- Total Disbursements/Expenditures this Report = $656,773.25

- Debts & Obligations = $0

- COH at Beginning of Period = $132,016.59

- COH as of 6/30/2010 = $1,767,671.91

Reid raised about the same amount in the same period, but he has a whopping $9 million COH.  He’s raised about $19 million so far this cycle and will probably raise at least $25 million by time this is all said, done and won.

And:  Does anyone doubt that a couple of Reid’s many millions has already been flagged for a huge ad buy in September and October?

Not me.

Great year to be a Nevada media group with ads to sell.

RGJ via AP: Palin PAC Gives Sharron — That’s With TWO “R”s — Angle $2,500

By Elizabeth Crum | 9:18 am July 12th, 2010

Get it right, people.  The Daily Caller yesterday noted that Sarah Palin spelled Sharron Angle’s first name wrong  — with only one “r” — in one of her recent Tweets.  A PAC website in support of Angle did the same last week.

Though there has been no formal endorsement (yet) of U.S. Senate candidate Sharron Angle by Sarah Palin, the SarahPAC did recently stroke Angle a check for $2,500.

The coveted Palin endorsement will come for Angle at some point.  Sarah Palin is no way, no how going to refrain from formally endorsing the woman the GOP hopes can ride this year’s anti-incumbent wave to a demoralizing victory over the Democrats in the form of a Harry Reid defeat.

Palin is already lending moral support to Angle, who has been under fire from the Reid Campaign from the moment she gave her acceptance speech on June 9.  In two Tweets posted yesterday, Palin defended Angle on Social Security:

“Sharon Angle’s right: new workers should get to invest some Social Security withholdings in their own savings accounts”

“What part of ‘The System is Going Bankrupt’ don’t you understand, Mr. Reid?”

That Daily Caller piece noted that Palin also went directly after Obama for remarks made during his visit to Las Vegas last week, including this statement:

“He’s got most disconnected, backasswards plan ever imposed on the country we love,” Palin said…

Though the president is being pummeled regularly on the economy and it’s likely the Democrats will suffer for it in November, Politico this morning noted that many of Obama’s policies will not take effect until after his first term, or well past the second.  Assuming he wins a second term, of course.

Harry Reid & John Ensign: All Good Things Must Come to an End

By Elizabeth Crum | 11:09 am July 8th, 2010

Ralston said in an early morning Flash that it’s likely the end of a beautiful friendship, and I quite agree.

And it’s all because of Sharron Angle.

You know how our good Senators Harry Reid and John Ensign have that decade-long gentleman’s agreement (aka non-aggression pact)(<— the photo there is worth the click-thru) not to go after one another?

This is surely the beginning of the end of that beautiful friendship.

You read that right, Dear Readers.

After calling Angle’s positions too “rigid” and declining to endorse her in June, Barbara Vucanovich, the godmother of the Nevada GOP, received a phone call from Senator Ensign. He proceeded to persuade her to meet with Angle to give her some feedback (i.e. that Angle ought to soften up her views).  As Vucanovich told Ralston:

“John said, ‘You need to tell her that. We need to defeat Harry Reid,’” Vucanovich told me…

Read the rest of Ralston’s story (good stuff, including some rather pointed remarks by our former senator about Angle), but the thrust of my post here is this:

No way, no how, is Harry Reid going to let this one slide.  I predict gloves off, Dear Readers.  Whether later this year when that ethics investigation heats up (wait for it in September/October) or when Ensign is running in 2012 (should he survive that long, which I doubt), there is going to be payback.  And how.

As an aside, all primary season we talked about whether Republican candidates in Nevada would or would not want the scandal-tainted John Ensign to “help” them (which might hurt them) during the general election.  Sharron Angle last year said she didn’t really relish the idea of assistance from Ensign, but then softened her position (she seems to be getting good at that) in a recent interview.

In this case, Angle got Ensign’s help whether she wanted it or not, and – ironically – it’s probably going to cost Ensign a lot more than it costs her.

Team Reid Is Back Up With Angle’s Pre-Primary Website

By Elizabeth Crum | 3:01 pm July 6th, 2010

Apparently the Team Reid attorneys have determined there is nothing to worry about re: the copyright infringement threats from Team Angle, so they have now relaunched her previously resurrected website (It’s Alive!)(Again!!) www.TheRealSharronAngle.com.

My two cents on this is that it was rather silly for Team Angle to so stridently object to the re-publishing of a campaign website she thought was just fine and dandy from October through June 9.

What possible rational justification could there be (and why would you think it is politically smart) to issue a “Cease and Desist” to try to prevent people from reading your past (recent) policy positions?  Especially when you just spent 9 months on the campaign trail repeating the slogan “Don’t read my lips, Read my record” every five minutes?  And more especially when, as it turns out, you do not have a legal leg to stand on…?

Anyhow, here’s the Team Reid press release:

Sharron Angle’s Pre-Scrub Website memorialized online…now permanently

After 24 hours of caution following frivolous legal threats to censor our free speech, Democrats resurrect Angle’s website with her truly-held views

LAS VEGAS – Just how pathetic have Sharron Angle’s new DC handlers become in their efforts to hide her extreme and dangerous agenda from Nevadans? Well, immediately following Angle’s primary win, they pulled down 3,000 words of text from her website that outlined her extreme views in great detail. And yesterday, they threatened legal action against the Reid campaign.

For what, pray tell, did tort reform crusader Angle threaten this frivolous legal action? For resurrecting Angle’s pre-primary, pre-scrubbed website – quoting her radical agenda in her exact words without edit – to illustrate the extent to which she has tried to hide her dangerous plans like eliminating Social Security and abolishing the Department of Education.

Summoning all the fake indignation possible, the Angle campaign called the maneuver a “dirty trick” and suggested the attempt to simply memorialize Angle’s pre-scrubbed record had purely nefarious motives. Nevermind the fact that the Reid campaign announced publicly in the media their intention to publicize the record of Angle’s old website even before Angle began promoting her new one.

Out of an abundance of caution, the Reid campaign decided to temporarily remove the website in question while we investigated their allegations. Well, the phony legal threats and the feigned indignation are over – and we’re not going to let Sharron Angle retroactively censor Sharron Angle. The original website, including Angle in her own words on her dangerous and extreme agenda, has been re-launched at: www.TheRealSharronAngle.com.

Just to be clear to Sharron Angle and her handlers, it’s called free speech and it’s nearly absolute under the First Amendment. (We know, these “big Constitutional issues” are tough for you – like when you said separation of Church & State was “unconstitutional” exactly one week ago.)

“The question is: what will Sharron Angle do now to hide her extreme views on killing Social Security and eliminating the Department of Education from Nevada voters? Perhaps she’s checking to see if there are any Second Amendment remedies,” said Jon Summers, spokesman for the Reid campaign.

Team Angle Accuses Team Reid of “Nefarious Actions” and Privacy Violations

By Elizabeth Crum | 8:06 pm July 5th, 2010

See the prior two posts for background on this one.

And then, this press release from Team Angle a short while ago:

For Immediate Release

Senator Harry Reid’s Campaign Forced to Take Down Deceptive Website

Reid Campaign blamed for trying to capture data belonging to Angle Supporters

Reno, NV – Today U.S. Senator Harry Reid’s campaign was forced to take down a website that falsely represented itself as Sharron Angle’s campaign website and attempted to deceive Angle supporters into giving their personal information to the Reid campaign. Reid’s campaign received a Cease and Desist Notice complaining of “nefarious actions,” including the abuses of proprietary materials from the Angle campaign website and for potentially violating the privacy of supporters who may have been submitting personal information to be used for U.S. Senate candidate Sharron Angle’s campaign.

According to a letter from the Angle campaign’s lawyer, “… these activities violate a number of federal statutes regarding the internet and your client has clearly misappropriated my client’s copyrighted materials. In addition it appears that the only interactive function on the fake site is the capturing of names of persons seeking to add their names and email addresses as supporters of Sharron Angle.”

Angle spokesman Jerry Stacy said that Reid’s campaign responded immediately by removing the site. “Make no mistake, the Reid campaign was forced to take this site down because they were breaking several laws and trying to deceive the voters,” Stacy said. “You’re going to see a lot of dirty tricks like that from Reid’s campaign.”

Stacy also added that he is not surprised by the continual shady tactics coming from the Reid campaign. “This is a clear case of a desperate man doing desperate things to win. We knew that Harry Reid was trailing in the polls and that he would do anything to win — but for Harry Reid’s campaign to resort to actually breaking laws would be amazing even for him. Harry Reid may feel like he is above the law when he’s off in Washington, but back here in Nevada we expect better from our leaders. This is just one more reason Harry Reid has got to go.”

Here’s the letter:

Cease Desist Notice to Reid Campaign

Angle Sends Cease and Desist Letter, Team Reid Redirects URL to Different Opposition Website

By Elizabeth Crum | 10:43 am July 5th, 2010

According to the press release below, Team Angle sent a Cease and Desist letter to Team Reid demanding that they take down their resurrection of her prior campaign website (see my previous post for more on this) which was, presumably, copyrighted.

Team Reid has responded by redirecting the url (www.TheRealSharronAngle.com) to this website.

Here’s the press release:

ANGLE TAKES LEGAL ACTION TO SILENCE…SHARRON ANGLE

Republican Candidate can run, but can’t hide from her long-held extreme positions

LAS VEGAS–Sharron Angle must really be scared that the extreme positions she has held for her lengthy political career are already coming back to haunt her.  The Republican candidate for U.S. Senate is now taking legal action to have her former campaign website removed from the Web in an effort to hide her dangerous and extreme policies from Nevada voters who she knows will reject them.

That’s right.  Sharron Angle is trying to silence, well, Sharron Angle.

The day after Angle won the Republican primary, she scrubbed her campaign website, leaving only a page for online contributions and limited descriptions of where she stands on certain issues.  Then, just last week, Angle launched her new site, but 75% of the language she had on her original issues page was missing.  In an effort to make sure Nevadans know where Angle actually stands on the issues, the Reid campaign launched www.therealsharronangle.com, which displays the original content from Angle’s previous website.

That must have been more than the self-proclaimed Oath Keeper could handle, because she sent the Reid campaign a cease and desist letter, calling for www.therealsharronangle.com to be pulled off the Web.  Despite her threat of a frivolous lawsuit, Nevada voters can still learn about her long-held policy positions at www.sharronsundergroundbunker.com.

“These are Sharron Angle’s positions in Sharron’s own words from Sharron’s own website. What was good enough for Nevada voters to read during the primary should be good enough for them now,” said Reid campaign spokesman Jon Summers.  “Sharron has long believed in killing Social Security, eliminating the Departments of Education and Energy and shipping nuclear waste to Nevada. We’ve always heard that Sharron Angle is an unapologetic conservative.  It has to be embarrassing for her to have her handlers trying to hide who she really is.”

What Happens on the Internet Stays in Harry Reid’s Opposition Files

By Elizabeth Crum | 8:02 am July 5th, 2010

All right, it’s a bit of a stretch to that header from “What happens in Vegas stays in Vegas,” but it’s early and I couldn’t think of anything better.

Team Reid archived and has re-launched Sharron Angle’s pre-primary website, calling it “The Real Sharron Angle.”  It does appear to be an exact replica except that the front page “Donate” button has been disabled (ha).

Angle’s website has been revamped as of late last week.  Frankly it surprised me that the new and improved site took so long (22 days from her win) to launch.  It was pretty evident in the final weeks leading up to the election that Angle was probably going to pull off the win.  Why didn’t anyone on her campaign team (or in the various GOP camps) think to get her new website ready and up as soon as she won?  Or at least be ready to swoop in and quickly get it redone and up within 24 to 48 hours?

In contrast to Team Angle’s sluggish start, Team Reid and/or the state Dems and/or their pals and surrogates were out with anti-Angle Facebook pages and websites and Twitter accounts and press releases as she was giving her acceptance speech on primary night.  (As we were sitting at the KTNV anchor desk listening to her remarks on election night, the producer kept running in with faxed press releases from the state Dems and printouts of all the opposition media already popping up everywhere.)

Team Reid was quick on the draw with this one, too.  Angle put her new website up sometime last Thursday morning. The Team Reid press release (provided below) went out at 3:01 pm.  And Angle’s email blast announcing her new website did not go out until about an hour later, at 4:09 pm.

It seems pretty “Campaign 101″ to me that you don’t let the opposition announce and define your new website for you.  You launch your site and send out your email blasts and Tweets simultaneously.  Otherwise, this happens:

Reid Campaign Re-Launches Sharron Angle’s Campaign Website

www.TheRealSharronAngle.com resurrects Angle’s original website featuring her dangerous and extreme agenda, before her handlers scrubbed it

LAS VEGAS – Seeking to hide her extreme and dangerous agenda from Nevada voters, Sharron Angle today removed more than 75% of the contents of the “issues” section of her webpage – deleting all references to her true positions on issues like eliminating Social Security and her plan to make Yucca Mountain into a haven for America’s nuclear waste. Angle has also removed controversial endorsements like the ‘Birther’ PAC Declaration Alliance that she had proudly touted in the past. Apparently Angle and her new handlers think that scrubbing her website will make voters forget about her long-documented, radical positions.

Fortunately for voters seeking a true window into Angle’s real positions, a “new” website will allow them to view her dangerous and radical ideas – the ones she has espoused consistently for decades before her new handlers deemed them too radical. (Original typos included.)

View Angle’s real, pre-scrubbed website here: www.TheRealSharronAngle.com

“Sharron Angle thinks she can fool Nevada voters about her extreme and dangerous agenda to eliminate Social Security and Medicare, abolish the Department of Education, shut down the EPA and the DOE in the middle of the worst environmental crisis in our history, and end regulatory oversight of Wall Street and big oil companies like BP,” said Reid campaign communications director Kelly Steele. “Obviously, Sharron Angle’s new handlers are as alarmed by the prospect of promoting Angle’s extreme and dangerous agenda for Nevada as most mainstream voters will be when they learn her true views.”

Team Angle is going to have to step up the speed, timing and coordination of their messaging if they hope to compete with the Reid Machine on the ‘net.  I hear there are some new boys in town to help with just that, so we’ll see how they do in the weeks and months to come.

My Three Cents on Sharron Angle’s Face to Face Interview

By Elizabeth Crum | 3:54 pm June 30th, 2010

If you have not yet seen last night’s must-see Sharron Angle interview with Jon Ralston, here it is.

Although she has been widely criticized for running from the media since her nomination, Angle deserves credit for sitting down with the best, toughest political interviewer in the state.  Having been in the Face to Face hot seat before, she had to know Ralston would not go easy on her (he didn’t).  Angle’s willingness to stroll over those coals ought to dispel any notions that she is afraid to show up and engage.

And kudos to Face to Face for booking her when no one else could.  And for doing such a great job with all the before/after quotes and clips with which to confront and question her.

On the issues:

Social Security — There is no doubt that Angle has morphed her rhetoric on this one.  She’s moved from talk of elimination to reform and “personalization.”  And if she had a dollar for every time she’s talked about protecting the existing funds of our nation’s seniors in a “lock box” over the past few weeks, she could personally fund the entire program.  She is now saying she is for giving people a choice, Rand Paul style, between the existing entitlement plan and some privatized/personalized version.

But her position on this really doesn’t matter because as Ralston rightly pointed out, Social Security as a program is going to be fine until roughly 2037 which means it will be eleven months into 2036 before Congress admits there is a problem and does anything about it.

I do give Angle some credit, though, for working into her remarks what I think were some fairly effective comments about Harry Reid/D.C.’s idea of fixing things, which is to raise taxes, print more money or go deeper into debt.  That kind of talk appeals not only to conservatives but to independent voters of a certain kind.

Jobs and Unemployment Benefits – Angle did a very nice little dance step when asked about prior comments that it was not her (or any Senator’s) job to create jobs.  She did so by way of saying it is the role of a Senator to “create a climate conducive to creating jobs.”  Sounds like a line straight out of the Professional D.C. Campaign Consultant’s Playbook.

But she did not move as gracefully when challenged on past remarks about the extension of unemployment benefits and a “spoiled citizenry.”  Angle tried to say she wasn’t really talking about people themselves, but about a system that does not dole out money and manage incentives the way it should.  “What has happened is the system of entitlement has caused us to have a spoilage with our ability to go out and get a job,” she said.

It sounded pretty thin, but she had to try to mitigate because it’s just not a wise to call unemployed and hurting people “spoiled,” especially when their numbers represent roughly 14% of the people who could vote for you.

I think Angle’s insistence that the state ought to stop paying unemployment benefits because “there are jobs that do exist” will not be taken well by folks (and their friends and families) who fill out umpteen applications a week and show up at every Job Fair and still can’t find work.  Not sure why you’d keep insisting there are jobs out there when comparative to the population that is out of work, there really are not.

Incentives for Small Businesses — I’m guessing Angle did not really mean to praise a bill for which Harry Reid will get credit if passed, but that is just what she did when Ralston asked her if she supported the tax incentives for small business that are moving through the Senate this week.  And you can bet it’ll show up in a Team Reid ad.

“People are really looking to those second amendment remedies” – This is another past Angle-ism that is tricky to walk back, though she gave it a try by admitting the comment was “a little strong,” explaining that what she really meant is that people are “afraid of their government” and then whipping out that trusty old stand-by, the out-of-context defense.  I thought Ralston did a great job of confronting her with her statement and trying to get a straight answer as to whether she really thinks taking up arms against Washington D.C. is a viable option.

Perhaps Angle and certain other Tea Party candidates will one day figure out that dropping broad hints about storming the halls of Congress with sawed off shotguns is not the way to win hearts and minds.  Or general elections.

Separation of Church and State – The upshot, despite some analysis that sees her position on this as fairly radical, is that Angle holds the same position as most of the Christian Right as well as many non-Christians who are not hostile to some expressions of faith and religion in the public square and the schools.

Her contention is that while the U.S. Constitution says there shall be no establishment of state religion, it does not in fact include the words “separation of church and state” and that we, at times, go too far in trying to keep the two totally separate.  Especially when talking about the rights of parents to educate their children (at no additional cost) in religious rather than secular schools if they see fit to do so.

Abortion – Angle is a purist.  No abortions for any reason, including incest and rape.  It’s actually the most consistent pro-life position one can hold, but it raises the ire of many and does not appeal to most moderates of either party.  I think it’s a problem for her, electorally, but this is one issue on which she has apparently not adjusted her views.  (I found it interesting that Ralston asked her about capital punishment as a follow-up.  She made a distinction between protecting “innocent life” and the criminal, which one takes to mean she is ok with the death penalty in some cases.)

Overall, I thought she did fairly well, although she smiled, laughed and nodded agreeably a bit too much.  As candidates not accustomed to running for the U.S. Senate may tend to do when they are nervous and being grilled under a spotlight in front of the entire state.

Hopefully we’ll see another of these interviews soon, as well as a debate between her and Reid.

Nevada GOP: “Nevada Continues to Suffer Under the Leadership of Harry Reid”

By Elizabeth Crum | 7:50 pm June 18th, 2010

In what will be their favorite talking point of the campaign season, the Nevada Republican Party yesterday put out a press release showing a screen shot with this accompanying headline:

MYTH: “Harry Reid: No one can do more”

from this pro-Reid TV ad, followed by this:

TRUTH: Nevada unemployment hits 14 percent, leads nation

Associated Press: “LAS VEGAS — Nevada’s unemployment rate hit 14 percent in May, pushing the Silver State ahead of Michigan to lead the nation in joblessness.

The state Department of Employment, Training and Rehabilitation reported Friday that the jump from 13.7 percent in April set a new record for Nevada.”

– (Associated Press 6/18/2010 – Nevada unemployment hits 14 percent, leads nation)

Yes, the narrative of the GOP – it’s their story and they’re sticking to it! – from now through November 2 will be that Harry Reid is responsible for the sorry state of our state.

Meanwhile, Team Reid will constantly remind voters how many jobs he has brought to the state and how much worse things would or could be without him and the bailouts/stimulus.  And how wacky and “dangerous” Sharron Angle is, of course.

Harry Reid Campaign Targets Non-Partisan Voters With An “In Her Own Words” Angle Mailer

By Elizabeth Crum | 7:26 pm June 18th, 2010

Looks like Team Reid is going after the independent and non-partisan vote right away.  Jonathan Humbert over at KLAS-TV, who is a registered non-partisan, received the following campaign mailer at his house today:

Is the Nevada U.S. Senate Race Really a Money Game?

By Elizabeth Crum | 12:34 pm June 17th, 2010

The NRSC (and Ralston via Twitter) this morning point to a story in National Journal’s Hotline saying GOP candidate Sharron Angle has been raising about $100,000 per day since she won the primary.

Her campaign was slightly (about $30K) in debt pre-primary, so this is good news for her.

Having said that, Harry Reid will raise and spend at least $25M on this race, so Angle has a long way to go to match him so she can try to battle it out on the Nevada airwaves.

I do wonder, though, if Angle really needs That much money in order to beat the Majority Leader.  Reid’s low approval ratings didn’t budge much even after he had spent roughly $9M during primary season, so maybe this is a race in which money doesn’t mean what it usually does.

(I’ll wait for everyone to stop laughing before I continue…)

Is it possible Reid could spend another $10M on ads and still find himself in only the high 30s or low 40s?  That his “all I’ve done for Nevada” messages – much of which, to be fair to him, is quite true – will not resonate one bit in a state that is suffering so badly?  And that every time Harry Reid’s face is on TV, even in a positive context, it elicits an “Oh yeah, we don’t like that guy” instead of an “Ain’t he grand” reaction?

As has been said repeatedly, this election will largely depend on voter sentiment about the economy.  Unfortunately for Reid, most fiscal indicators show little movement.  And Nevada will be behind the national curve, so it is unlikely we’ll see even the foreshadowing of a recovery here before November.

If the narrative people carry close to their hearts is The Economy Is Still Wrecked: Harry and Friends to Blame! it’s quite possible all the TV ads in the world will not save him.  In fact, voter vitriol might be further fueled by the fact that Reid will be pouring $10 to $15 million into saving his, er, seat at a time so many regular people are hurting.

Don’t be surprised if you see an Angle ad saying just that.

I will be curious to observe and tally all the ad buys and then look at the polls in thirty days or so.

Reid v. Angle: You’re Out of Touch! — No, You Are!!

By Elizabeth Crum | 7:20 am June 11th, 2010

From the Inbox this morning, Sharron Angle says Harry Reid is “out of touch.”  You can be sure this will be an accusation bandied back and forth between the two camps all season long.  Here’s the release followed by some commentary:

Angle Blasts Reid on Supporting EPA Regs that Harm Nevada

Reno, NV – U.S. Senate candidate Sharron Angle said that Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid was “continuing his work against the people of Nevada” by defeating an attempt to stop the Environmental Protection Agency from imposing draconian energy regulations. The Senate defeated a resolution of disapproval of those regulations by a vote of 47-53 on Thursday.

“Once again Harry Reid has put the extreme environmental agenda of the Obama Administration against the well being of his own state,” Angle said. “He twisted arms of his fellow Democrats who wanted to vote for the resolution, causing it to fail. These regulations proposed by EPA would be harmful to most sectors of the domestic energy industry and eventually substantially raise the utility bill of every American. Even one of the most liberal members of the Senate, Jay Rockefeller, said he was voting for the resolution because he ‘didn’t want EPA turning out the lights on America.’”

“It’s time to replace a Senator who is so out of touch with what the people of Nevada want,” Angle said.

I doubt most of the “people of Nevada” have even been following this bill and related issues, but maybe I don’t give enough credit.

If you haven’t been tracking it:

A number of Dems did vote in favor of S.J.Res.26 – a bill introduced by Senator Lisa Murkowski (R-Alaska) – on the basis that the EPA overstepped its rightful bounds when it determined last fall (using power invested in it by the Clean Air Act) that greenhouse gases endanger public health and welfare and that the EPA therefore has the authority to regulate them.

Some of the Dem senators who voted with the GOP on the bill disagreed with the EPA’s finding because they instead wanted Congress to set such policy, while some said No because they did not want all the regulation that is coming to and will be a damper on business and industry in their states in already difficult economic times.

Most of the Republicans believe the EPA exceeded its constitutional authority in the matter, and most object to the decision by the SCOTUS in Massachusetts v. EPA, in which the high court ruled that the Clean Air Act was intended and authorized by Congress to deal with not just pollutants but also with the “problem” of increasing concentrations of carbon dioxide.

(Note:  I put “problem” in quotation marks because of the Climategate scandal and all the yet unanswered questions about data manipulation that went on related to greenhouse gases and global warming.)

Democratic Senator John D. Rockefeller , mentioned in Angle’s release, said he was concerned about the “impact on the economic security of West Virginia and our energy future.” Other Dems echoed.

All the arguing on this one really did not matter, though, as President Obama had said he would veto the resolution should it pass both houses of Congress.

Rasmussen Has First Post-Primary Angle-Reid Poll

By Elizabeth Crum | 9:00 am June 10th, 2010

Here.

Angle by 11 points.  5% for “Other.” 6% Undecided.

Poll says “Voters not affiliated with either party prefer Angle by 10 points.”

As I said last night on KTNV, let’s give it about 30 days before we get too excited about numbers.

Team Reid is going to try to crush Angle early and hard so they can call it Done and start focusing resources on all the Dem down-ticket races.

If they hope to have her weather the Category 5 winds of Hurricane Harry (a Harrycane…?) Tea Party Express and/or Club for Growth and/or the RNC better hurry up with major infusions of ad cash into the Nevada airwaves on Angle’s behalf.

Day One of the Campaign to Defeat Sharron Angle in the U.S. Senate Race

By Elizabeth Crum | 6:56 am June 9th, 2010

Actually, it’s Day Two, because the state Democratic party, the DSCC and Progress Now were out with Angle-bashing press releases (and PN with a new website and Twitter user called @Sharrontology) as Angle was still in the midst of her victory speech last night.

Here’s the Progress Now press missive to give you a taste of what’s to come:

Dear Friend,

Republican voters have just veered far to the right in selecting their party’s standard-bearer.

By selecting Sharron Angle as its Senate nominee, Nevada’s GOP has proven it is more committed to appeasing the political whims of the Tea Party and other fringe elements than it is to governing.

We know that’s The Wrong Angle. Wrong for Nevada. Wrong for America.

That’s why we’re launching the website www.TheWrongAngle.com to highlight her dangerous policies and frightening world view.

Angle would eliminate Social Security, the U.S. Departments of Education, Energy, the EPA and the IRS. She’d pull us out of the United Nations and repeal health care for more than 100,000 Nevadans.

We think those views are The Wrong Angle, yet they only scratch the surface of her right-wing agenda.

Please visit the site today, sign up for updates and join us as we work to protect the state this election year.

http://www.TheWrongAngle.com

And to get text message updates from The Wrong Angle text the word “ANGLE” to 30644 (standard rates apply).

Take action today for Nevada’s future.

Yours in progress,

Erin Neff
