Senator Roberson’s Majority PAC Debut a Veritable NV GOP Who’s Who

By Elizabeth Crum | 2:07 pm August 21st, 2011

Behold the long list of Host-supporters at the Republican Senate Majority PAC’s kick-off event in Tivoli Village next month. Host contributions are $5,000 so by my math, funds raised will be at least $35,000.

Senator Mike Roberson organized the event and is heading up the GOP effort to raise money and retake the Nevada Senate next year. The Democrats currently have an 11-10 majority, but 10 senate seats will be open come November of 2012.

Some say the role nicely positions Roberson to lead the Republican Senate caucus and if his efforts are successful, possibly the Senate itself.

In June, Senate Minority Leader Mike McGinness chose Roberson over veteran state Sen. Barbara Cegavske, who many expected would lead the caucus.

Roberson has said he will work hard to raise money and recruit candidates and that he is “confident” Republicans can win the upper house. He also denies there is any bad blood between he and Cegavske, insisting the two are “on the same page” with what needs to happen over the next 15 months.

In a memorable moment on the senate floor during the 2011 legislative session, Sen. Mike Schneider called Roberson the “rookie from Green Valley” as he criticized him for signing a pledge not to raise taxes.

Looks like the rookie is making a play for permanent pro status, while both parties wait to see how the new Senate districts are drawn.

Roberson has already proven he can raise money and run successful campaigns. During his own 2010 election, Roberson raised $380,000 to unseat incumbent Democrat Joyce Woodhouse.

Another key player in the GOP effort is Sen. James Settelmeyer, whose campaign gave $1o,ooo to Roberson’s campaign at a crucial time last year. Some have floated Settlemeyer’s name for a possible leadership position, but he has so far been non-committal about his interest.

Under Fire, State Senate Majority Leader Pulls Plug On ‘Pay To Play’

By Sean Whaley | 10:03 am August 18th, 2010

CARSON CITY – Senate Minority Leader Bill Raggio, R-Reno, today criticized a fund-raising “pay to play” letter sent out recently by Majority Leader Steven Horsford, saying it borders on an ethics violation.

“I have always avoided that kind of a fundraiser,” he said. “I think it is inappropriate. The perception is that to have access to a leader or chairman you have to pay. I think that sends a terrible message.”

The Nevada News Bureau first reported Tuesday the existence of the letter sent by Horsford, D-Las Vegas, seeking as much as $25,000 in contributions to his political action committee in exchange for access to himself and committee chairmen and women.

Horsford did not return a call seeking comment on the email solicitation. But in a statement released to KRNV Channel 4 in Reno in response to the story, Horsford said he will pull the plug on the fund-raising plan.

“This really was a poor action,” Horsford said. “I take full responsibility for it. I have directed my staff to discontinue the program. It was never our intent to send a message that in order to gain access to our chairs that people needed to make donations, but clearly the optics show that, and at a time when we need confidence and responsibility among our elected officials, I pulled the plug.”

“I just thought it was inappropriate, offensive,” Raggio said. “It’s a very poor way to campaign. This is really strong-arming.”

Raggio said he has also been told by Republican candidates that their efforts to raise money for their campaigns are being hampered by intimidation tactics aimed at lobbyists.

“I’m told there is a lot of intimidation out there,” he said. “My GOP candidates are being told by lobbyists that if they contribute to their campaigns, they won’t get anything done in the session.”

The Nevada News Bureau has been unable to confirm with any lobbyists directly that such tactics are being employed by Democratic legislative leadership.

Neither Horsford or Assembly Majority Leader John Oceguera, D-Las Vegas, returned calls seeking comment on the claims.

Horsford has a 12-9 majority in the Senate but is seeking a veto-proof 14-seat majority.

Oceguera is seeking to hold on to his current 28-14 veto proof majority. The Assembly 40 seat is a key race in that effort. Incumbent Democrat Bonnie Parnell is not seeking re-election.

Both Pete Livermore, a Republican candidate for the Assembly 40 seat in Carson City, and Michael Roberson, the Republican candidate challenging Democrat incumbent Joyce Woodhouse in Clark District 5, say they have been told the same story by lobbyists.

“The bulk of the lobbyists I talk to tell me the same thing,” Roberson said. “He (Horsford) is definitely playing hardball.”

Nevada State Republican Party Chairman Mark Amodei said he too is aware of the effort by Democrats to prevent campaign donations to GOP candidates.

“It’s not even an if or a maybe,” Amodei said. “Lobbyists have been told that if you contribute against my candidate, don’t bother showing up. I absolutely believe it to be true.”

Amodei, a former state Senator from Carson City, said in an interview Tuesday that such an edict borders on an infringement of constitutionally protected free speech rights.

“I don’t know if it is illegal or not but it sends a clear message about the ability of people to participate in the process,” he said.

No such edicts came from Republicans when they were the majority in the Senate, Amodei said.

“I think it falls under the category of a sad state of affairs for Nevada politics,” he said.

Chachas Co-hosts NYC Reception for NV GOP Governor Candidate Brian Sandoval

By Elizabeth Crum | 7:26 pm July 21st, 2010

Interesting, from former U.S. Senate candidate John Chachas this afternoon:

In the process of logging thousands of miles in Nevada, I had the great pleasure of spending a good deal of time with Brian Sandoval, who we Nevadans sincerely hope will be the next Governor of the Silver State.

Brian is a devoted public servant who gave up a lifetime Federal judgeship to pursue the Governor’s office. He will face Senator Harry Reid’s son, Rory, in the November election. While Nevada currently has a Republican governor, there can be no doubt that the Reid machine will work tirelessly to help Brian’s opponent. Although Brian is presently holding a strong lead, with 44% of Nevada registered Democrat, it will be a tough fight. One Reid is bad enough.

On August 25th, Diane and I, together with Paul Singer, Anthony Scaramucci, Gail Jaquish and Steve Kenninger, will host a reception for Brian Sandoval from 5:30 to 6:30 pm at the St. Regis Hotel. If you are in New York we would be very grateful if you would come and support Brian’s effort to keep the Carson City governor’s mansion in the right hands.

For some of you receiving this, you will shortly be receiving a refund check of campaign funds you provided to me that I, regrettably, didn’t get to deploy in the general election. I hope you’ll think hard about re-deploying that check to Brian. Attached to this email are the invitation and the necessary donation form and information about the event.

America needs more leaders like Brian and we know you would enjoy meeting him in person.

We hope to see you there.

Obama’s Vegas Vacation

By Elizabeth Crum | 2:40 pm July 6th, 2010

Don’t forget (as first reported by Ralston in June) the POTUS will be here Thursday at 5:00 p.m. for some fluffing-up of Harry Reid and an overnight stay, Dear Readers.  This is the commander-in-chief’s third junket to Sin City in a year.

Among the things on Obama’s To Do list are a 5:30 rally at Aria followed by a private fundraiser on Thursday evening and a speech at UNLV Friday morning.

Obviously Team Reid believes the president’s visit will be of some help, despite the RNC’s (predictable) criticism:

“President Obama’s trips to Nevada have only reminded Nevadans of Harry Reid’s failed economic policies and motivated more than 28,000 Democrats to vote against Reid in his primary,” say they.

Obama’s approval ratings were only at/around 41% as of April according to that last Mason-Dixon poll done for the LVRJ, but I’m not sure how much stumping for Reid changes voters’ mind about either of them.  Very little, I’d guess.

And as that is the case, I am sure Reid is glad enough to have the fundraising help.

Maloof – Host of POTUS Fundraiser in Las Vegas – Gave to Tarkanian’s Campaign

By Elizabeth Crum | 11:48 am February 15th, 2010

I just love Nevada politics.  Never a dull moment and lots of laughs.  From @RalstonFlash on Twitter this morning:

This is embarrassing: George Maloof, tapped to host POTUS for DNC fundraiser this week in Las Vegas, gave $2,400 to Reid foe Tarkanian in Sept.

And:

Maloof gave to Reid in ’07, Obama in ’08. I hear Tark bought Palms condo so Maloof felt obligated. Palms boss is big D donor over years.

Hee hee.

Update (4:14 p.m.): Wowza.  Ralston just shared this (emphasis mine) in his daily Flash newsletter:

But, as I understand it, the DNC event is $30,000 per couple, so Maloof will be doing more for Reid and the Ds than he ever did for Little Tark.

Guess so!

Update (9:02 p.m.): Double Wowza re: Ralston’s correction:  the Maloof fundraiser is $30K per person.

San Fran Liberals to Protest Outside Harry Reid Fundraiser

By Elizabeth Crum | 3:39 pm February 12th, 2010

So says Joe Garofoli at the San Francisco Chronicle politics blog today:

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid is facing some serious re-election trouble in Nevada this year, with everybody from the Tea Party to the RNC targeting him for a takedown.

So what do Dems do when they’re in trouble? They come to the warm bosom and 24/7 ATM that is California’s liberal coast. First stop for Harry: A Monday night soiree ($2,400 a pop suggested) at the home of George and Judy Marcus. On Tuesday morning, Reid’s pockets will be stuffed at an 8 a.m. fundraiser at the Fairmont Hotel thrown by Joseph Alioto (son of the former SF mayor). (H/t to the Sunlight Foundation for the par-tay tip.)

The Senator best be careful because that bosom may be colder than a witch’s. Looks like the progressive activists from San Francisco’s CREDO Mobile are doing a Facebook shout-out to see what message Reid should hear from progressives who will be waiting to greet him here.

Garofoli’s post includes examples of some not-very-nice sign suggestions from the CREDO FB page (go read them if you wish) and then adds:

Welcome to San Francisco, Senator.

But don’t feel too bad for the Maj Leader. In this election cycle he has raised almost as much in California as he has in his home state, according to our pals at the Center for Responsive Politics, (h/t California Watch).
