Team Tark Looking for A Few Good Men, With Cash

By Elizabeth Crum | 8:00 am June 3rd, 2010

From Team Tark this morning, a claim that they are in “a virtual tie” – and the only “true outsider” in the race! – along with a solicitation for funds ($100 from 200 folks) for a final ad buy (bold text is mine) that will help Danny go down in history:

Dear Friend,

Danny Tarkanian is on the cusp of a remarkable victory in Nevada. Sue Lowden, is in steep decline due to a series of missteps and questionable campaign activities. His other opponent, Sharron Angle, is still seen by some as a candidate that cannot muster enough support to beat Harry Reid. Internal polls continue to show Danny in a virtual tie, and when the dust settles next Tuesday, Danny Tarkanian will be the Republican standard-bearer for what will be an historic campaign against Harry Reid.

One of the benefits of a long and expensive primary is the chance to prove your candidate’s character and demonstrate the resilience and longevity of your campaign. We can tell you that no candidate has worked harder than Danny. It has not always been easy – Danny has had to contend with a dozen candidates running for Senate and a slew of out of state special interest money spent on his opponents. Despite it all however, Danny is the only true outsider in this race, and he has managed to fight his way to the top.

Many of you have contributed generously to Danny’s campaign. Even though some of you cannot vote for Danny, you have seen his potential, have understood the enormous impact that his election to the U.S. Senate would make, and have trusted in his message. Your support has made the difference and next Tuesday you will be among those standing proud. In this final week, Danny is hitting the campaign trail hard, but he needs our help one last time. The campaign is prepared to make a heavy television buy for the final few days, but we need your support to be seen and heard. If just 200 of you contribute $100 or more, Danny can run our final television buy and make his last appeal to Nevada’s people. It could make all the difference on Election Day next Tuesday.

Join with us in this historic moment. Be a part of a campaign that will re-write the political landscape. Help Danny Tarkanian when your contribution will matter most. It only takes a moment to make a valuable contribution online.

Respectfully,

Team Tark

Not sure what kind of game-changing statewide ad buy you can get for $20,000 right now…?  Will have to be targeted to get bang for that buck, I think.

Team Sandoval Reports $1.8 Million Raised, $1 Million in Last Period

By Elizabeth Crum | 2:30 pm June 1st, 2010

Per Ralston a few minutes ago:

Brian Sandoval reports raising about $1.8 million.

For governor’s race, source confirms.

Just under $1 million in latest reporting period, about the same as Reid the Younger.

Cash on hand is $575,000 — that puts him about $2 million behind Rory Reid when the general election starts next week.

I admit I am very curious to see what happens in Weeks One and Two of the general.  Will Team Rory come out of the corner swinging?  Or will they box and weave for a bit?

Team Rory Reports $4.4 Million Total Raised, $1 Million in Last Period

By Elizabeth Crum | 11:20 am June 1st, 2010

Current cash on hand is $2.6 million.

Eight more days ’til they start spending gobs of it on Rory is Great and/or Sandoval is Not ads.

Martin Pounds Away on Marshall in State Treasurer’s Race

By Elizabeth Crum | 3:24 pm May 24th, 2010

A really good attack campaign will always nail the competition twice:  when he/she initially errs, and when he/she “finally” straightens out (but only under pressure, it is insinuated).

An example, from the Steve Martin for State Treasurer campaign, which today points out that Kate Marshall has ceased running unclaimed property auction notices starring herself:

Treasurer Changes Advertisements

Without Her Picture and Her Name, How Will We Know it’s Kate?

Treasurer changes ads, scaling back her practice of using tax dollars to promote herself

LAS VEGAS, NV – It seems an ethics complaint has put the brakes on Kate Marshall using official State Treasurer notices as campaign ads. In 2009 Marshall issued unclaimed property auction notices from the State Treasurer’s office with her picture and name prominently displayed in a fashion more closely resembling a campaign ad than an official notice. If the latest notice is any indication, maybe Marshall has finally gotten the picture – by taking her picture off the notice.

“I am glad to see that Kate Marshall has finally gotten the message that the taxpayers are not responsible for funding her campaign,” said State Treasurer candidate Steve Martin. “Nevadans deserve a State Treasurer that recognizes the responsibility to use state resources for the people and not for campaign efforts. We need principled, ethical leadership, and that is why I am in this race.”

The 2009 and 2010 auction notices are attached to Martin’s release which ends with these words:  “better late than never.”

Nomination for Worst Mailer of Campaign Season

By Elizabeth Crum | 2:59 pm May 24th, 2010

Dullard Mush has it (calling it the worst contrast ad in the history of political mailers) along with an analysis.

Definitely nominated.

In Which Tea Party Organizer-Activist Debbie Landis Further Explains AIB’s Endorsement of John Chachas

By Elizabeth Crum | 9:15 am May 24th, 2010

File this one under the label that pretty much describes John Chachas’ entire U.S. Senate campaign:

Too Little Too Late.

Or, if you prefer, tuck the folder behind Ralston’s recent characterization:

What Might Have Been.

This weekend one of the largest, most influential grassroots groups in Nevada – Anger Action is Brewing – surprised everyone by coming out with a late-in-the-game endorsement of John Chachas.

A spokesperson for the Tea Party Express couldn’t call me fast enough to give me his three cents.  (Can you guess what he said…?)

I later chatted with AIB founder Debbie Landis about her decision.

Here’s what she said about her organization’s ability to endorse within the limits of its non-profit status:

Apparently, when I was on my paperwork filing binge for AIB to make sure we were in compliance with everything we needed to be, we filed an intent to influence elections with the SOS as a non-profit…so although as a 501c(4) we cannot contribute financially nor dedicate ourselves to a campaign, we can endorse candidates we think will further our cause.

As for why she decided to endorse at all, and why so late:

I have been getting non-stop emails asking who we like, why, and whether we’re afraid to commit because we only want to support the Republican who wins the primary.

It wasn’t an emotional decision, and I tried to make that clear. It’s okay to like Tarkanian and Angle personally and still think somebody else can do a much better job.

I guess it’s up to John to get out there, but the fact that his team is not doing as much as they could is no excuse for me not to do so.

On whether she thinks she’ll regret it:

The one regret I have is being so stupid as not know what our abilities were under NRS 294A.375 and for waiting so long to announce who we were supporting.

Re: why this endorsement is “special” (if it is):

I think the difference is that we’re not profiting and we’re responding to people who honestly respect the work AIB has done and the time we’ve taken, and who really want to know what our conclusions are.

On whether she stands to gain or lose by doing this:

I’m sure I burned a ton of bridges with this endorsement, but I can’t turn off that little voice that says Chachas is better, faster, smarter and a much more logical choice than any of the other candidates given the state of Nevada and the financial health of the U.S. today.

Perhaps he is.  Soon to be Was.

“HARRY: Money, Mob and Influence in Harry Reid’s Nevada”

By Elizabeth Crum | 8:22 am May 24th, 2010

That’s the title of this book by some guy named Daxton Brown, just in time for the general election.

The book has a publication date of March 2010 and is for sale at Barnes & Noble and other sites.

Here’s the sales site blurb:

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid’s connections to a substrata of money, mob and influence in Nevada going back fifty years. Revelations from Reid’s former campaign manager paints an unkind picture of a politician looking for money on the side. Most shocking is the claim that Harry Reid took campaign donations from pimp Joe Conforte of the Mustang Ranch brothel. Also disturbing are accounts of Reid’s long friendship with a lawyer to many of the most notorious strip clubs in Las Vegas. Oscar Goodman, Las Vegas Mayor and lawyer to the mob also enters the picture. Sweetheart treatment of land developers, the G-Sting scandal, fat cat campaign contributors and more taint the record of one of the most powerful politicians in the U.S. and therefore the world.

Sounds juicy (which former campaign manager is telling tales?) but not sure I wanna spring for the $20 to find out.  Time to offer to do a book review so I can get a free copy, I guess…?

Michele Fiore Campaign Correction Contains Another Misstatement

By Elizabeth Crum | 8:55 am May 20th, 2010

The woman who says she is best positioned to take down Shelley Berkley in November seems to be having some trouble getting her facts straight.

Last night, after this post about a misstatement in a press release that went out on the wires yesterday, CD-1 candidate Michele Fiore’s campaign team issued a correction:

MICHELE FIORE SUPPORT AND ENDORSEMENT CLARIFICATIONS

Las Vegas, NV – May 19, 2010 – The Michele Fiore for Congress campaign is offering a clarification of pledged support and endorsements of her candidacy.

In a previous campaign email announcing the endorsement from The Asian American Group of Nevada and Grassroots support, the campaign mislabeled Michele’s RNC Rule 11 letter as an endorsement rather than an authorization allowing support.

The Nevada Republican Party leadership and both RNC committee members authorized the Rule 11 letter. The letter allows the RNC to back one GOP candidate over other GOP candidates in the pre-primary race if it chooses to. It is not a traditional endorsement, comparable to the endorsements Michele has received from RNC Committeeman and Former Governor Bob List, State Assemblyman Ed Goedhart and businessman Monte Miller. The Rule 11 letter from the NRP is an announcement of support from the state party for a selected candidate.

The campaign is pleased to clarify this and apologizes for any confusion. Michele looks forward to working with the RNC once she becomes the GOP nominee for CD1.

Er, yeah.

Except that a Rule 11 letter is not a show of support from the Nevada Republican Party.  It is simply a letter of support signed by the three National Committee members from Nevada.  The letter never went before the Executive Committee or the Central Committee of the state party, and the party has not endorsed her nor ever stated that it supports her.

Michele Fiore’s Rule 11 letter was simply a statement of support by three people:  Bob List, Heidi Smith and ex-chairman Chris Comfort.  Only one of whom, incidentally, is even registered to vote in CD-1.

While we’re on the subject, Fiore endorsers Ed Goedhart and Monte Miller, while both good guys, don’t live in CD-1 either.  But then neither does Michele Fiore (she actually lives in CD-3).

So…what we have here is a candidate who has claimed to be a strongly endorsed primary front-runner with both RNC and state party support but who in fact has a handful of endorsements comprised of only one person who can actually vote for her — even if we include Fiore herself.

You can’t make this stuff up, Dear Readers.

Will IE Campaign Against Sandoval Lead to Blowback on Rory in the General?

By Elizabeth Crum | 8:39 am May 4th, 2010

It is often said that all’s fair in love, war and politics, but  the always feisty and often irreverent blogger at Maven & Meddler apparently doesn’t see it that way.  She has written a scathing post about Dan Hart’s “cheesy front group,” aka www.DontBetOnSandoval.com.  Here’s her opener:

Don’t let anybody say that I only walk the talk on a single side of the street. In this case, a former Reid operative is pissing me off with this campaign against Brian Sandoval – the guy who would be Governor Jim ‘Crazy Pants’ Gibbons replacement.

Out of sheer cussedness I think I’d vote for Sandoval, were the election tomorrow. If I could re-register as a Republican temporarily to vote for Sandoval in the Republican primary, I would do it in a heart beat.

Is the Rory Reid campaign listening?

They ought to be.

The rest of the post includes a passionate defense of Sandoval, some choice words about Hart and his ads, and a few little gems for Rory, too.  (Language warning, so those with delicate sensibilities oughta brace yourselves — or skip it.)

If other Democrat and/or Independent voters see things through the same lens Maven does, and if Sandoval wins the GOP primary, it’s possible Hart’s Sandoval-bashing campaign could ultimately have the opposite of its intended effect:

Keeping Rory Reid out of the governor’s mansion.

Arpaio Considers Run for Governor of Arizona

By Elizabeth Crum | 10:06 am May 3rd, 2010

The AP is reporting that 77-year old five-term Maricopa County sheriff Joe Arpaio will soon announce whether he’ll run for governor of Arizona.

Arpaio toyed with the idea in 1998, 2002 and 2006, but decided against it each time.

Arpaio’s last campaign finance report showed he had raised $1.2M.  Sure seems like a cash stack fit for a gubernatorial run to me — especially as he is not yet in his final year as sheriff.

With AZ immigration reform in the headlines (and a “pet” issue of the often-controversial and never boring Arpaio), there’s only one thing to say:

Run, Joe, run!

Update (4:15 PM): He ain’t runnin’.

Brian Sandoval’s Refusal to Face the Facts

By Elizabeth Crum | 7:59 am May 2nd, 2010

Question:  Do voters have a right to expect factual accuracy and intellectual honesty from a former federal judge and candidate for governor sporting the uplifting campaign slogan “A Reason to Believe Again“?

Answer:  Yes.

Question:  Are voters getting either of those things from Brian Sandoval regarding his past support of the Marriage Protection Pledge and present support for SB283?

Answer:  No.  Or at least, not yet, according to this morning’s story in the RJ.

It is really quite simple.  Allow me to enlist the bold text feature in order to illustrate just how uncomplicated this is:

In 2002, Brian Sandoval pledged to oppose the endorsement of all marriage “imitations” including “domestic partnerships.”

Sandoval agreed that “awarding spousal equivalent rights to non-married couples defeats the civil purpose of marriage” and that “various “domestic partnership,” “civil union,” or “reciprocal beneficiary relationship” benefits belong exclusively to marriage”.

He also promised to “oppose any endorsement of marriage imitations, including “domestic partnerships,” “civil unions,” reciprocal beneficiary relationships,” or any similar arrangement.”

The quoted language is taken directly from Sandoval’s signed Marriage Protection Pledge which you can read for yourself here.

Fast forward to autumn of 2009, when Sandoval said he supported SB283, a law that made legally joined, same-sex couples eligible for privileges similar to married, heterosexual couples.  In other words, he supported a reciprocal beneficiary relationship granting perks that were previously only available to married couples.

Which in 2002 he explicitly promised not to do.

Can it be any more clear?  How can Sandoval — an accomplished attorney, formal state attorney general and former federal judge — escape what is evident to any honest thinker who can read at or above an 8th grade level?

There are only three possibilities before us in this matter.  Sandoval either signed a marriage protection pledge containing language he did not understand, supported a reciprocal beneficiary law containing language he did not understand or, sometime between 2002 and 2009, he changed his mind on the issue.

I think we all know which one is true.

And here’s the rub, Dear Readers:  There is nothing wrong with it.  Candidates and public officials have every right to reconsider and change their positions on issues over the course of time, as long as they are candid and explain their reasons.

But Brian Sandoval has done neither.

As the RJ story states:

Still, [Sandoval] disagrees with critics that his Question Two pledge doesn’t align with his support for a 2009 law, SB283, which made legally joined, same-sex couples eligible for privileges similar to married, heterosexual couples.

“I do think the language in the pledge is different than the bill that was passed,” Sandoval said.

No, the language is not different.  And saying so over and over does not make it so.

It is baffling that a man who hopes to lead Nevada into better times and a more perfect union is either unable or unwilling to acknowledge the obvious truth, clearly state his present position and then offer an intelligent argument for why it has changed.

Until he does, and in light of his other contortions, voters have no reason to believe.

The Goose and the Gander, Part… I’ve Lost Track

By Elizabeth Crum | 9:33 pm April 28th, 2010

Anjeanette Damon of INP at the RGJ found that Governor Gibbons, too, listed his main (state) office phone number on his declaration of candidacy.

Earlier this month, the NV GOP filed ethics complaints against (Democrats) Sec of State Ross Miller and Treasurer Kate Marshall, who had provided their office phone numbers on their candidate declarations.

The two complaints were based on the claim that it’s against the law to use state resources for campaign activities.

Which it is.

AD’s closer:  “No ethics complaint has been filed by the governor’s party against him.”

This is the problem with these things, peeps.  You really shouldn’t go around filing complaints and sending out strongly worded press releases against members of the other party if you are not willing to do the same when someone on your own team screws up.

Or, I guess you can, but then you just look silly.

And, more importantly, the voters get disgusted with “politics as usual.”

What’s a brand new state party executive director to do?

Darn! What Will We Make Fun of Now? (Gibbons Hires New Campaign Comm Dir)

By Elizabeth Crum | 11:32 am April 27th, 2010

Team Gibbons has signed a new campaign communications director.

Who presumably will be writing all his future missives and robbing me of one of the great joys of this campaign season:  shredding Gibbons’ terrible press releases for fun.

Jill Lufrano is a former reporter and state public information officer with a background in communications. Worked for both the Nevada Appeal and the Reno Gazette Journal at one point. Also spent some time as a PIO for the state Division of Environmental Protection.

Welcome, Jill.

(sigh)

$2,000…?! Typo or Click-thru Genius?

By Elizabeth Crum | 5:58 pm April 26th, 2010

When I saw the bolded sub-header in congressional candidate Craig Lake’s press release today, I was so amazed I had to click through to see if it was really true or perhaps a typo:

Craig Lake Only Republican With More Than $2,000 Cash On Hand to Close 1st Quarter 2010

TWO thousand…??

Nope, more like $290,016.

Not bad.  Especially considering that GOP primary oppoent Michele Fiore only has only $570 and Kenneth Wegner has $1,817.

(Hm.  I thought Fiore was the Republican party’s anointed one?  Where are all the rumored giant checks from Nevada’s Fiore-loving Republican business moguls?)

But the really impressive number is Shelley Berkley’s cash on hand:  $1,648,242.

Wowza.
