Berkley to Run for U.S. Senate

As first reported by Steve Sebelius over at Slash Politics, the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee is about to announce U.S. Rep. Shelley Berkley as their chosen candidate for John Ensign’s senate seat.

Berkley has been running polls and mulling a run for months. She’s toured upstate Nevada several times, and in a recent survey first reported by Jon Ralston — delivered by the same pollster who accurately predicted U.S. Sen. Harry Reid would beat Sharron Angle in the 2010 senate race — showed Berkley beating Heller by four points.

Thus far, the only other Democratic candidate to announce for this race is attorney and Financial Crisis Inquiry Commission member Byron Georgiou, who has raised over a million in preparation for the race (about half of it is own money).

This should be an interesting race due to the gobs of money that will be spent by both parties and their surrogates. Some analysts believe it’s a possible pick-up for the Democrats in 2012.

Rep. Dean Heller is the presumed nominee on the other side of the aisle, but the seat is by no means assured so he will have to work for it.
