That was Harry Reid on Ralston’s Face to Face a few minutes ago, dispelling all myths that he might not run for reelection. Before that, he answered questions (which I’ve paraphrased) about Yucca:
Is Yucca Mountain really dead?
“I’ve worked on this since I came to Washington more than two decades ago. If someone had suggested 10 years ago, five years ago, three years ago, two years ago…” [yawn] “…that this project would now be done, well…”
(No, that was not Harry Reid yawning; that was me.)
“I think I can take a little credit for killing Yucca Mountain.”
But is it really, really dead?
“You have a person that’s dead. And then they’ve been run over by a car. And then a bulldozer runs over them. And you’re asking if the person is really dead… Yes it is dead.”
What do we do with the site now?
“…maybe seeing how we can combine the work we are already doing at the NV test site… Perhaps there are things we can do to continue our fight against terror by using that big hole in the mountain.”
You mean anti-terror training?
“We are already doing that at the NV test site. There may be ways we can use this facility in that regard…. There is no need to just walk away from it.”
